COMMUNITY ACTION FOR HEALTHY HOMES (CAHH)

Community Action for Healthy Homes (CAHH) is a Brownsville-based initiative to improve community health through a rapid survey-fix process that identifies and makes repairs with the most impact on resident health and safety.

CAHH’s holistic survey-fix model is based on an international, award-winning model that has a proven track record of building community knowledge and infrastructure to sustain healthy home repairs. Unlike other initiatives that focus on checklists and complaints, CAHH is action-based and solutions-focused, with a commitment to “no survey without service.” Communities, where the Housing for Health survey/fix program has been implemented, have demonstrated a 40% reduction in hospital admissions.

Why Are We Reaching Out to Landlords and Housing Providers?

The Brownsville Partnership will test, roll out, and scale this project across 130 homes around Brownsville by Spring 2022. We are keen to work with landlords and housing providers across all types of Brownsville’s diverse housing stock. Our starting point is that landlords and tenants have the common goal to create a safe and healthy place they can call home. Landlords and tenants don’t want homes to be a place where health conditions worsen. Through small routine repairs to home hardware, such as electrical outlets, showers, and toilets, Community Action for Health Homes has a proven method to improve the health of residents.

Why Participate in Community Action for Healthy Homes?

  1. We believe landlords can be part of improving the health and well-being of Brownsville residents. We are here to partner with you. Through its systematic focus on home hardware, the CAHH survey-fix process not only improves people’s health, but it also has additional benefits for you as a housing provider.

  2. Our rapid, clustered approach is professional and efficient. We use data to identify common fixes from deteriorating or deficient home hardware and other causes to prevent more costly repairs - and more serious health impacts.

  3. Our survey-fix team is composed of local residents and partners - we build trust with tenants, educate residents on apartment care, and undertake immediate nontechnical fixes we identify during each survey.

We have a roster of local professional trades vendors - or we can work with your trusted partners - to ensure timely follow-up and quality repairs requiring plumbing, electrical, and other skilled trades.
